5 Free Resources to Learn Generative AI and Prompt Engineering
Prompt engineering has become the Wild West of tech skills. Though the field is still in its infancy, there’s a growing list of resources one can utilize if you’re interested in becoming a prompt engineer. Even if that’s not a goal within itself, and you just want to learn to fully utilize the power of generative AI, learning how to create effective prompts could easily help you ensure the quality of content generated by AI is of the highest quality.
So let’s explore some free online resources data scientists and non-tech-focused workers can use to build foundational prompt engineering skills. Also, as a bonus, most of the courses you’ll find here also offer certificates upon completion!
Foundational Generative AI courses
The following courses give those interested in prompt engineering the foundational knowledge they’ll need to understand how generative AI works, the history of AI, and a bit of background of its limitations.
IBM SkillsBuild — Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals
IBM provides a great overview of this learning plan. It covers the basics of artificial intelligence, including its history, how it works, and its potential applications. It also includes a hands-on simulation using IBM’s Watson platform in which you build and test a machine learning model. The course takes about ten hours to complete but when you do so, you leave with important context related to AI.
Google Cloud Skills Boost — Introduction to Generative AI
In this course provided by Google, the user learns the basics of generative AI. You will learn what generative AI is, how it is used, and how it differs from traditional machine learning methods. You will also learn how to use Google Tools to develop your own gen AI apps. Unlike IBM’s course, there isn’t an emphasis on the historical context of AI and its development, but with that said a user gets a more practical overview of the field.
Prompt Engineering Courses
Now on to the good stuff, actual prompt engineering! In these courses, users will get some hands-on experience working with LLMs such as ChatGPT, to learn what it takes to develop effective prompts. As anyone who has used Google Bard and ChatGPT knows, the quality of the prompt will dictate the quality of the content generated by the AI.
Intro to ChatGPT and Generative AI by 365 Data Science
This one-hour course introduces users to both ChatGPT and generative AI. It also goes on to teach how to use them both effectively. As many people have come to know, ChatGPT can be used for a variety of tasks, such as writing code, auditing formulas, suggesting ideas, providing knowledge, summarizing text, and writing creative text. 365’s course covers best practices, prompt generation, foundational AI knowledge, AI ethics, the dangers of AI hallucination, and how to connect to Open AI’s API so beginners have a great footing to start their AI journey.
Learn Prompt Engineering — FreeCodeCamp
FreeCodeCamp is a great resource for non-tech-oriented people who want to get their feet wet when it comes to programming, and their prompt engineering course is no exception. Running under one hour, the user will learn the basics of prompt engineering, basic AI, machine learning, and linguistics, while getting a great overview of language models. As for hands-on, users will get to learn best practices, AI hallucinations, and Zero-shot & few-shot prompts.
DeepLearning.AI -ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers
Though beginner-friendly to a degree, this course by DeepLearning’s Andrew Ng and OpenAI’s Isa Fulford takes users on a journey to learn how to iterate, summarize, transform, and work within the confines of ChatGPT to develop high-quality prompts. There are also use cases to follow so that those who are more software development-minded, can follow along and learn how to use large language models to help them with their work.
