Boston, with its world-class universities and colleges, has long been a hub for innovation. In the last few years, however, it’s solidified its role in the tech, biotech, biopharma, and data science industries. Why is Boston considered one of the cities at the forefront of AI, and the ideal location to host ODSC East this May 9th-11th? Check out 5 reasons below.

Home to Many of the Biggest Companies

Although a mid-sized city, Boston is home to many of the biggest companies in biotech and pharma. All told, there are more than 1000 biotech companies of all sizes located in the greater Boston area. Many of them, you have probably heard of, including Boston Scientific, Pfizer, Moderna Therapeutics, Merck & Co., Amgen, and Novartis.

Home to World-Class Universities

With colleges and universities like Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, and many, many more, Boston is home to thousands of students and researchers representing the next generation of data scientists. It also boasts some of the best and brightest innovators in the industry. With all of this brain power in one city, the capacity for innovation is limitless.

Availability of Research Funding

The greater Boston area’s high concentration of universities and teaching hospitals has made it the ideal location for research funding. With five of the top health-funded hospitals in the nation (MGH, Brigham and Women’s, Boston Children’s, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center), it’s perhaps unsurprising that Boston has held the record for receiving the most NIH funds for at least 24 years.

Startup Hotspot

The availability of funding has also contributed to the establishment of Boston as a startup hotspot for the biotech and pharma industries. Recently established startups include Akouos, Reverie Labs, Neumora Therapeutics, and Tessera Therapeutics. You can learn more about these and other top 30 startups here.

Booming Job Market

With so many colleges, universities, startups, and companies, it’s unsurprising that Boston also has a booming job market. Over the past 10 years, Boston has seen a 35% increase in biotech jobs and a job growth of 47% in biotech research and development.
