The Basics of D3.js

D3.js, short for Data-Driven Documents, is an extensive JavaScript library that enables you to bring data to life using HTML, SVG, and CSS. Its main strength lies in its ability to help you create sophisticated and interactive visualizations that can be embedded into web pages. D3.js is not just a tool for creating static charts; it’s a dynamic framework that allows data to dictate its representation, making your visualizations as complex or as simple as the data requires.

D3 Examples

512 Paths to the Whitehouse

This first example shows the “512 Paths to the Whitehouse” using data from the 2012 presidential election between incumbent Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The visual not only breaks down the methods of how each candidate could, in theory, achieve victory but also gives the user a clear visual of how these possibilities could come to pass and the effects one victory has on their opponent.

Average Time Men’s 100-Meter Freestyle 1896–2012

This next example takes us out of the world of politics and instead brings us a breakdown of how every athlete who participated in the Men’s 100-Metter Freestyle performed based on average speed racing each other in a single race. As you can see, there is not only a wide distribution of times but as we get closer to the data’s last update, 2012, average times became significantly shorter. All of this could help data enthusiasts come up with a fun set of theories beyond the change in avenge speeds.

England & Wales Baby Names 1996 to 2021

Now let’s take a look at baby names with a chart that shows names chosen in the nations of England and Wales from 1996 to 2021. This interactive chart is pretty neat for a few reasons. One major reason has to be the difference in name ranking between the start of the data and the end. It’s an easy tracker to see how names either grew in popularity or decreased. Users can also enter names, let’s say Richard, and see that in the period the data has, Richard, went from .16% to just under .02% of new baby names.

Deadly Tornado Outbreak — April 25–28, 2011

In this final example of D3 data visualizations, we’ll look at a time period of only three days to show the massive impacts of tornados. Here, users can mouse over areas affected by tornadoes to see the “F-Scale” of the tornado, damage, number of injured, and location. These kinds of visualization are helpful in determining historical threads in weather and give non-data professionals a powerful visual of the impact of violent weather events.

D3 looks great, right? Now let’s take a look at some Vega examples!

County Unemployment 2009

The following choropleth map using 2009 unemployment rates by country is a great way of visualizing economic downturns in an easy manner. Now if you also were to layer it with say, rates of businesses going under, crime, and other variables, it’s possible to come up with some interesting theories and ideas using data visualization.

Wheat and Wages chart

As alluded to earlier, one of the most important functions of data visualizations is the ability to track how two seemingly different variables can have an effect on each other. This example is a recreation of William Playfair’s chart that visualized the relationship between the price of wheat, the wages of a mechanic and that period’s reigning British monarch. Though it may not seem like a lot, this visualization is one of the first that was able to show that relationships between different variables could have an impact, or at least seem to.

Volcano Contours

In our final example, we get to see a colored contour plot of the Maungawhau volcano in New Zealand. The visual you’ll see right below demonstrates contour generation directly from a provided grid of values. For geologists and other researchers, this map gives a great indication of elevation change, its range, degree, and depth using color.


Some great stuff right? As you can see, the ability to visualize data can bring a tremendous amount of life to a series of numbers. This is how data professionals are able to bridge the connection between them, and stakeholders who may not have the same level of expertise.
