Microchip maker AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has become a founding member of the PyTorch Foundation. This non-profit, which will be a part of the Linux Foundation, will work to help advance artificial intelligence tooling by creating an open-source environment that looks to help the popular framework advance projects. Other members include Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Meta, and Amazon Web Services.

Originally created by Meta AI, PyTorch is an open-source machine learning framework that is based on the Torch library and is used for computer vision and NLP. As a framework, researchers have used it in greater frequency for a variety of deep learning projects, and is popular among artificial intelligence researchers. Much of this is due to the framework’s syntax and usage being similar to Python, the most popular coding language.

Open-source and democratizing state-of-the-art tools for AMD, as Brad McCredie, corporate vice president, Data Center and Accelerated Processing stated “Open software is critical to advancing HPC, AI, and ML research, and we’re ready to bring our experience with open software platforms and innovation to the PyTorch foundation.”

As a member of the PyTorch foundation, the company is in a unique position due to its product and software portfolio that allows customers and partners to develop & deploy applications with multiple forms of artificial intelligence from both enterprise and the cloud. This doesn’t include their own offerings in the machine learning world with the ROCm open software platform which scales out machine learning workloads.

Other members of the foundation were excited to have AMD as a part of the Foundation’s governing board. Santosh Janardhan, VP of infrastructure at Meta stated, “We are excited to have AMD join the PyTorch Foundation and bring its extensive expertise in HPC, AI, and ML to our members…AMD has continued to support PyTorch with its integration on ROCm open software platform and has worked extensively with the open-source community and other foundation members to advance the performance of ML and AI workloads. The collaborative support offered by AMD continues our engagement across broad industry initiatives for global impact.”

With the growth of artificial intelligence in just about every industry and sector on Earth, it will be fascinating to see the impact of this partnership and how the PyTorch framework will continue to evolve.
