ODSC is proud to announce keynote speakers and other influencers for the ODSC West 2020 Virtual Conference this October 27–30 — six preeminent researchers and visionaries who will kick off the already expert lineup set to speak at the community-based event for data science practitioners and AI engineers.

These academics, innovators, and thought leaders are leading the charge in the development and proliferation of AI across industry, and they’re all individuals worth knowing about so you can follow their research, learn about their companies’ latest developments, and see where AI is heading.

ODSC West 2020 Conference Keynotes

Tom M. Mitchell, PhD
Founders University Professor, School of Computer Science | Carnegie Mellon University

Tom Mitchell is known as the “Father of Machine Learning” having founded the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University and led it as Department Head for its first 10 years, teaching many famous students including Andrew Ng. He is a world-renowned researcher in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cognitive neuroscience. Currently, he serves as the Interim Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon.

Jeannette M. Wing, PhD
Professor of Computer Science, Former Corporate Vice President | Columbia University, Microsoft Research.

From 1985 to 2012 Jeannette M. Wing was a member of Carnegie Mellon University’s faculty, where she has also served as the Head of the Computer Science Department twice. During her career, she has also been a Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research and the Assistant Director of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation. She is currently the Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute and Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University.

Oren Etzioni, PhD
CEO | Allen Institute for AI

Dr. Oren Etzioni has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) since its inception in 2014. He has been a Professor at the University of Washington’s Computer Science department since 1991, and a Venture Partner at the Madrona Venture Group since 2000. He has been the founder or co-founder of several companies, including Farecast (sold to Microsoft in 2008) and Decide (sold to eBay in 2013). He helped to pioneer meta-search (1994), online comparison shopping (1996), machine reading (2006), and Open Information Extraction (2007). He has authored over 100 technical papers that have garnered over 2,000 highly influential citations on Semantic Scholar.

Lisa Amini, PhD
Director | IBM Research

Before her role at IBM Research Cambridge, which is also home to the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and of IBM’s AI Horizons Network. Lisa was previously Director of Knowledge & Reasoning Research in the Cognitive Computing group at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in New York, and she is also an IBM Distinguished Engineer. During her time as the founding Director of IBM Research Ireland, and the first woman Lab Director for an IBM Research Global, she developed the strategy and led researchers in advancing science and technology for intelligent urban and environmental systems.

Suchi Saria, PhD
Director, Machine Learning & Healthcare Lab | John Hopkins University

Saria’s goal as a data scientist is to use sophisticated computer science and the deluge of data available in health care and other settings to individualize patient care and to save lives. Her pioneering work led to her being named one of Popular Science magazine’s “Brilliant 10” (2016); one of MIT’s “35 Innovators Under 35” (2017); and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders (2018).

Tian Zheng, PhD
Chair, Department of Statistics | Columbia University

Prof. Zheng develops novel methods for exploring and understanding patterns in complex data from different application domains such as biology, psychology, climatology, and etc. Her current projects are in the fields of statistical machine learning, spatiotemporal modeling and social network analysis. Her research has been recognized by the 2008 Outstanding Statistical Application Award from the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Mitchell Prize from ISBA and a Google research award.
