Artificial Intelligence is Coming to Microsoft’s Search Engine Bing
Software giant, Microsoft, is working to enhance its search engine Bing with artificial intelligence capabilities. According to personnel cited by The Information, this will be a joint venture between Microsoft and ChatGPT creator OpenAI. The goal is to launch this new AI-enhanced version of Bing before the end of March as a direct challenge to Google. The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI isn’t new as the former invested $1 billion into the startup back in 2019. That investment was part of a multi-year partnership to develop artificial intelligence technologies on Microsoft’s cloud computing service, Azure.
Microsoft has been showing off its investment in artificial intelligence technologies over the last few months. For example, it unveiled its very own text-to-image generator, which will be embedded in Microsoft Illustrator. This in-app feature is set to become a so-called “all-in-one” sandbox for content creators, with a focus on social media. It allows creators to create unique images for posts on the Microsoft browser Microsoft Edge. This enhancement of Bing is likely part of these plans to create tools to keep users on their products without jumping around various tools.
But this isn’t the only upgrade coming to Microsoft’s search engine. In a blog post last year, it was announced that they would also be planning on integrating image-generation software from OpenAI, DALLE-2, into the Bing search engine and Azure. As of right now, DALLE-2 is only in invitation Beta access. But it’s clear that the software giant is aiming at rival Google’s spot as the top used search engine by adding AI-powered tools and features. Now whether this will topple the long-crowned search giant is anyone’s guess. But for now, investment into artificial intelligence by Microsoft is increasing
While OpenAI is getting needed funding to continue its research and expansion of AI technology, Microsoft is betting that it views AI investments as the key to the company’s future. For many, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Luis Vargas, Technical Advisor to Microsoft’s CTO has spoken at length at ODSC about the growing scale of AI. So the company isn’t exactly hiding its view that AI is the future of its products.
