Mariano de Socarraz, Founder and CEO of CorePlus, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in algorithm validation. “We are fortunate to have included Puerto Rican women in the validation of the algorithm. Ethnic diversity is key to eliminating potential algorithmic bias. Including this subset of the population ensures that Hispanic women are well represented. This is crucial as Hispanics are becoming a significant percentage of the US population.”

Cervical cancer incidence in Puerto Rican women increased from 9.2 to 13 cases per 100,000 between 2001 and 2017. Early detection is vital for providing therapeutic intervention, enhancing quality of life, and reducing healthcare costs.

Dr. Juan C. Santa-Rosario, CorePlus’ Chief Medical Officer, highlighted the rigorous validation process. “Our study included digitization of more than 1,500 cases scanned on the Epredia P1000 with water immersion at different modalities. Conducted by Dr. María del Mar Rivera-Rolón, our Board-Certified Cytopathologist, we can now review 100% of Pap tests processed at our laboratory using the Techcyte AI-assisted tool. This will provide more accurate results and promote patient safety.

Ben Cahoon, CEO of Techcyte, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. “CorePlus is one of the most innovative organizations in the world at implementing digital pathology solutions. We are thrilled they will be using our AI-based cervical cytology software to impact women’s health in Puerto Rico and globally. We appreciate their collaboration and shared mission to positively impact lab professionals and the patients they serve.

In a statement, CorePlus mentioned that it was dedicated to deploying new and disruptive technologies for the benefit of patients, physicians, and the healthcare ecosystem. Since 2020 the company has worked to help transform pathology to digital pathology and the use of AI algorithms.
