Elon Musk: China Will Take on AI Regulations
While speaking with Chinese leaders, Elon Musk commented that their government will take on AI regulations due to risks and the need for oversight. This comes after a meeting with officials from China during his recent trip.
The tech billionaire and owner of SpaceX didn’t go into great detail about the discussion, but he made his remarks in a Twitter Space chat on Monday. He said in part, “It’s worth noting that on my recent trip to China, I went to senior leadership there. I think we had some very productive discussions on artificial intelligence risks, and the need for some oversight and regulation.”
The calls for AI regulation in the United States and the EU has grown recently. But it seems the Chinese government is already on the regulatory train with several laws and regulations companies must meet before releasing AI products.
These comments come after a two-day trip to China where he met with senior Chinese government officials, most notably the highest-ranking vice premier, Ding Zuexiang. Other officials included China’s foreign, commerce, and industry ministers in Beijing.
During his Twitter Space with Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Musk continued and said, “And my understanding from those conversations is that China will be initiating AI regulation in China.“.
These comments come two months after China’s cyberspace regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, released draft measures for the management of generative AI services. This includes the need for firms and startups to submit security assessments to the government before the launch of products to the general public in China.
Part of the measures states the providers will be responsible for the integrity of data used for the training of generative AI products. Another requirement is that measures should be taken to prevent discrimination when designing algorithms and training data.
All of this comes a few weeks after the White House launched its own AI roadmap for risk management while not stifling innovation. The AI race is global and it’s clear that nations are attempting to balance the benefits of AI while finding the best way to mitigate risks through their own forms of responsible AI.
