FRIDA AI’s Paintings Show How AI is Changing the Art World
The entry of artificial intelligence into the arts has been a contentious relationship that has seen supporters and opponents argue for and against AI. In the summer of 2022, this boiled over with AI-generated art winning contests and art-focused websites beginning to take a stand against the technology. Now, things seem to be getting more interesting as a new AI robotic arm is creating original work.
In a report by Gizmodo, FRIDA, or Framework and Robotics Initiative for Developing Arts is making waves by producing abstract art pieces. Named after famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. It was created by Peter Schaldenbrand, a Ph.D. student from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science alongside faculty members Jean Oh and Jim McCann.
They were interested in exploring the intersection of technology and art. Using machine learning, they trained the robot to understand different painting techniques and styles, which the machine then used to create unique art pieces.
What sets Frida AI apart from other AI-generated art is the machine’s ability to learn and adapt to different styles, making it capable of creating distinct and complex artwork. Each painting produced by the machine is unique, with its own style and character. Though still, some will argue that its unique abilities are attributed solely to data sets using art from human creators. To which some have called an unfair copy of human work.
On the other hand. While some might argue that AI-generated art lacks the soul and emotion typically associated with traditional art forms, others see it as a new frontier offering endless possibilities. AI-generated art also provides artists with opportunities to collaborate with machines and explore new creative avenues. In short, another tool for artists to utilize in their art journeys.
All over the world, and in just about every industry, AI is impacting the way business is done. Some are using AI to enhance existing abilities. This is something that Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, believes is the correct approach to AI. Either way, with the continued advancements of AI, its disruptive nature will have to be addressed. Much of this is due to the momentum AI-powered tools are enjoying with widespread use.
As for art, AI and art will continue to have a love/hate relationship. That’s because the use of AI-generated art is gaining momentum in the art world. Frida AI’s paintings are a prime example of this trend, as is the growing use of AI tools by the public at large.
