Google is doubling down on its AI ambitions, setting a bold target of acquiring 500 million Gemini AI users by the close of 2025. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, CEO Sundar Pichai is confident in Gemini’s capabilities, viewing the AI model as a frontrunner in the competitive landscape.

Gemini, Google’s latest chatbot, is central to the tech giant’s strategy to regain momentum in the AI race. OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the industry by storm in 2022, leaving Google, despite its extensive AI research, struggling to catch up. Today, with Gemini, Google aims to reassert itself as a leader in the space.

Usage Metrics Show the Challenge Ahead

Although Google has not disclosed the number of active Gemini users, recent data underscores the scale of its task. As of Jan. 15, Gemini ranked as the 54th most downloaded free app on iPhones, far behind ChatGPT, which held the fourth position.

Further, ChatGPT’s mobile app boasts approximately 465 million downloads across iOS and Android platforms, compared to Gemini’s 106 million downloads, the majority of which occurred on Android devices. With ChatGPT reporting 300 million weekly users, Google faces an uphill battle in expanding Gemini’s user base to meet its ambitious goal.

Subscription Plans and Strategic Moves

As growth in search advertising slows, Google is exploring new revenue streams, including subscription-based models. The company offers a premium edition of Gemini for $20 per month, which includes additional features for users seeking enhanced AI capabilities.

In a move to increase adoption, Google announced this week that it will eliminate the $20 monthly AI fee for its Workspace products. Subscribers to Workspace Business and Enterprise plans will now have access to Gemini’s features at no additional cost. However, the company plans to raise the prices of these plans starting Thursday.

These strategic adjustments come at a time when Google is under pressure to demonstrate innovation and relevance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The Potential of Artificial General Intelligence

The broader implications of AI remain a focal point for the tech industry. As highlighted in a recent PYMNTS article, artificial general intelligence (AGI) could revolutionize businesses by enabling AI systems to adapt cognitive skills across domains.

“AGI would change the game completely,” the report stated. “It would possess human-like general problem-solving abilities and cognitive flexibility.” While current AI technologies like Gemini and ChatGPT excel at specific tasks, AGI could unlock unprecedented adaptability, transforming industries and workflows.

Conclusion

Google’s push to elevate Gemini’s reach to 500 million users signals its commitment to remaining a key player in the AI revolution. With competitive pressures from OpenAI and evolving market dynamics, achieving this milestone will require a combination of technological advancements, strategic pricing, and user engagement initiatives.

As the race for AI dominance intensifies, the coming months will be critical in determining whether Gemini can rise to meet Google’s lofty ambitions.
