Google Offers Free AI Tools and $1 Billion in Education Support for College Students

As millions of students prepare to return to college campuses, Google has announced a sweeping initiative to make its most advanced AI tools available for free to students worldwide. The tech giant is also committing $1 billion over three years to fund AI literacy, education programs, and research in the U.S.

“Bringing the best technologies to every student has always been core to Google’s mission,” the company stated in its official announcement.

Free Access to Gemini 2.5 Pro and Learning Tools

Beginning this week, college students aged 18 and older in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil can access a free 12-month Google AI Pro plan. This includes:

• Gemini 2.5 Pro: A powerful multimodal AI model that assists with homework, essay writing, and research.
• Deep Research: Generates custom research summaries from across the web.
• NotebookLM: An AI-powered organizational assistant with enhanced multimedia capabilities.
• Veo 3: Converts text or photos into 8-second videos with audio.
• Jules: An asynchronous AI coding assistant for debugging and feature development.
• 2 TB of Storage: Cloud capacity for files, notes, and projects across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos.

Students can sign up until October 6, and Google plans to expand access to additional countries in the coming weeks.

Introducing Guided Learning for Deeper Understanding

Unlike traditional AI responses, Google’s new Guided Learning mode in Gemini 2.5 Pro promotes active engagement by guiding students through questions and problem-solving steps. Designed in collaboration with educators and learning scientists, this feature supports tasks like essay structuring, test preparation, and tackling complex math.

In addition, multimodal responses — including quizzes, videos, and images — will help students test and reinforce their understanding. Google is also simplifying how teachers can share these tools with their students.

$1 Billion to Support AI Literacy and Workforce Readiness

Recognizing today’s students as the first generation of “AI natives,” Google is investing $1 billion over three years to bolster AI education. This includes:

• AI literacy programs
• Research funding
• Cloud computing resources
• The Google AI for Education Accelerator: Offers free Google Career Certificates and AI training to all U.S. college students

More than 100 institutions have already joined, including major public universities such as the University of Michigan, the Ohio State University, and the University of Virginia. This initiative also complements the rollout of Gemini for Education, which gives schools access to AI tools built specifically for classroom use.

Currently, over 80% of the top 100 U.S. universities use Google Workspace for Education. “Getting our most powerful technology into students’ hands — while supporting them with training and infrastructure — is how they’ll shape the AI platform shift,” the company stated.
