Google has taken a major step forward in the AI gold rush with the introduction of PaLM 2, the second generation of its large-scale language model. PaLM 2, powered by the innovative Carbon AI control system, brings human-like intelligence to Google’s products and services, including Bard, Gmail, and Google Docs.

According to Google, PaLM 2 has been extensively trained in multilingual text, encompassing more than 100 languages. This training enables PaLM 2 to understand, generate, and translate nuanced text, including idioms, poems, and riddles, across a wide range of languages.

In a direct nod to ChatGPT’s own abilities with graduate-level exams, PaLM 2 has even achieved mastery-level proficiency in advanced language proficiency exams. In terms of reasoning, PaLM 2’s training includes scientific papers and web pages containing mathematical expressions. Because of this, the model exhibits improved capabilities in logic, common sense reasoning, and mathematics. But that’s not the only training data.

PaLM 2 has been pre-trained on a large volume of publicly available source code datasets, making it adept at programming languages like Python and JavaScript. It can also generate specialized code in languages such as Prolog, Fortran, and Verilog.

But what is very interesting about PaLM 2 is its integration. According to the post, the LLM has already been integrated into more than 25 Google products and features, with its stated goal of bringing advanced AI capabilities directly to users.

Some notable examples include:

  • Expansion of Bard: PaLM 2’s improved multilingual capabilities empower the expansion of Bard, enabling it to support additional languages.
  • Workspace Features: PaLM 2 enhances productivity in Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets by providing advanced writing and organizing capabilities.
  • Med-PaLM 2: This specialized variant, trained by Google’s health research teams, excels in answering medical-related questions and summarizing insights from dense medical texts. It achieves state-of-the-art results in medical competency and has the potential to improve patient outcomes through multimodal capabilities.
  • Sec-PaLM: Designed for cybersecurity analysis, Sec-PaLM leverages AI to analyze and explain potentially malicious scripts, enabling more effective threat detection in real-time.

With the release of PaLM 2. Google is making it clear that it can connect its advancements in AI and LLM to real-world applications. Much of the latter is a significant part of rival ChatGPT‘s success. But with PaLM 2, it seems that the tech giant doesn’t want to just catch up, but lay down the ground world for future breakthroughs in generative AI.
