Over the past few years, artificial intelligence has become increasingly integrated into our day-to-day experiences. Two industries that have been particularly impacted are Healthcare and Biopharmaceuticals. In these industries, AI has influenced the development of new medications and therapies, changed the way we communicate with our healthcare providers, and helped doctors perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively. Below are several companies who are utilizing AI in interesting ways.

John Snow Labs

Named for the physician who helped end the London Cholera outbreak of 1854, John Snow Labs, provides AI solutions to healthcare organizations. John Snow Labs’ out-of-the-box solutions help healthcare companies streamline their AI model pipelines, increasing efficiency, and helping the organizations operate at scale. John Snow Labs also provides support, ensuring that healthcare companies have state-of-the-art NLP technology and the most recent information and guidelines available.

Allen Institute for AI

In 2015, a team of engineers and researchers at the Allen Institute for AI created the Semantic Scholar, an open-source, free to use search engine that utilizes AI to more quickly and efficiently derive insights and information from the millions of scientific papers that are published each year. Most recently, Semantic Scholar has focused on providing access to data on COVID-19 to help facilitate essential medical research.

Winterlight Labs

Winterlight Labs was founded in 2015 and is dedicated to using AI to improve the lives of people with psychiatric illness and dementia. Winterlight Labs’ focus is to reduce the amount of time it takes for people to access care. According to their website, their AI-based system is significantly faster, and more objective, than the paper-based systems frequently used to assess cognitive health. Additionally, their technology is able to use existing health data to identify the early stages of cognitive decline and help healthcare providers provide early intervention.

The Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute is also focused on early detection and early intervention in mental health disorders. Using machine learning to identify patterns in large-scale data, the researchers at The Alan Turing Institute, are building a predictive model that can help healthcare workers detect and predict the progression of mental health disorders in patients. Ultimately, they hope to reduce the number of invasive tests a patient must endure, the costs incurred during testing, and the occurrence of negative patient outcomes.

WEX Inc.

WEX Inc., a financial technology solutions company, just recently released a chatbot that is powered by AI and designed to provide a personalized and responsive healthcare benefits experience to both consumers and employers. Available 24 hours a day, the chatbot provides immediate assistance with routine requests, allowing customer service representatives to focus on the more involved, time-consuming issues their customers encounter.
