As AI and large language models continue to spread across industries, data science is rapidly growing in importance, and there is a high demand for qualified data scientists and data teams. As a result, many team leaders and managers are looking to find programs that help their teams develop the key data science skills needed to get the job done.

With the explosion in demand has come two major forms of training, in-person and virtual. Though each has its pros, in-person training is still king for team training. Let’s go through a few reasons why in-person training can give your team the edge in the ever-growing AI landscape.

Personal Interaction

The first and most apparent advantage that in-person offers is that it allows your team members to interact with others in the field without the filter of the computer screen. This can be particularly helpful for beginner to intermediate students who are still building critical foundational skills for learning data science.

This is due to how you get help from your peers and ask questions of your instructors which often assists others within the team. Online training, on the other hand, can be isolating, as you are not able to interact with other learners in the same way.

Hands-on Experience

The truth is that in many in-person data science courses, you will be allowed to work on real-world data sets and projects, while also having access to expert instructors ready to guide you wherever you may find yourself stuck.

This can be very helpful in learning how to apply data science techniques to real-world problems or learning to apply certain textbook skills outside of your comfort zone. Like with many other training options, once the training wheels need to come off, there is a gap in the knowledge required to make the leap into real-world use of your new skills.

Quick Feedback and communication development

Speaking of hands-on experience, another advantage of in-person training is that it allows you to get immediate feedback from your instructor and peers. This can be very helpful in learning data science, as you can quickly identify and correct any errors you are making while giving you the proper opportunity to develop excellent foundational habits that will benefit you throughout your data science career.

Then there’s communication. In person, you’ll have more opportunities to work on communication skills that will help you translate the data you analyzed into critical insights that will guide any organization that you work for. What makes a team great, is their ability to conduct like a well-trained orchestra and for this to be a reality, each member needs a certain expertise in communications.

This is something that with in-person training, teams often get ample opportunity to work on.

Networking

The old adage is accurate. Networking is king when it comes to career development and prospecting. And with in-person training, you’ll have a greater opportunity to build your network. When you attend an in-person data science course, you will meet other students who are interested in data science. This can be a great opportunity to build your network and make connections with potential future team members that you can identify.

Motivation

Finally, in-person training can honestly be more motivating as there is still a spark felt by having a team geother working to solve a problem. For example, when you are attending a class in a physical classroom, you are more likely to stay focused and motivated at the task at hand and will be able to lend a hand to others as needed. Believe it or not, the ability to assist others is a wonderful motivator while affirming your team’s ability and thus building greater trust.

On the other hand, with virtual online training, it can be more difficult to stay motivated, as it can be easy to get distracted. I mean, be realistic, if you’ve taken an online course, how often did you find yourself scrolling on social media? In person, it’s much more difficult to get distracted in the same manner.

What’s next?

As you can see, there are several reasons why in-person training is king for improving the skillset of your entire team. And if you’re ready to take that plunge to upskill your team, then ODSC West 2023 has what you’re looking for.

With hours of expert-led classes, workshops, and other training, you can all supercharge your data team. All in person, and all ready to help you take your organization to the next level when it comes to data.
