If GM Has Its Way, You’ll Have Your Own Knight Rider-Style Car…Sort of
Since its inception, Knight Rider had captured the imaginations of a generation. It was an artificially intelligent car that not only was able to drive autonomously and make up-to-the-moment corrections, but also spoke back to the driver and held out conversations. If you are a fan of the show, the drive of having your very own Kit was quite real. If General Motors has its own way, that dream might become a reality.
In a report by Semafor, General Motors is currently working on bringing a ChatGPT-style AI assistant to its automobiles in the near future. So though you won’t get that famous turbo boost, and other utilities that made Michael Knight’s roadside adventures a thing of legend, what you’ll likely have is something that speaks back to you while you’re in the driver’s seat. So what is motivating the automaker to take such a step? Well according to Reuters, General Motors Vice President Scott Miller said in an interview last week that, “ChatGPT is going to be in everything.”
In a big way, he’s correct. As reported yesterday with the release of GPT-4. Many organizations are utilizing the power of AI to empower existing apps and services. Much of this is due to the growing desire to provide users with a world-class AI tool that can bring out the most of their services. In the same vein, it seems that General Motors is looking to provide this to their drivers as well.
While speaking to Reuters, he gave examples of this by pointing to how a vehicle could help integrate schedules on a calendar, open your garage door using your voice, and other features. But it goes further. Semafor’s report, which broke the story, suggested that a driver could ask the AI-enabled car to help them fix a flat by playing a video or providing step-by-step instructions. With the explosion of AI-powered tools over the last few years, it’s clear that industries are taking note.
While speaking to Reuters, a General Motors spokesman said of AI in their vehicles, “This shift is not just about one single capability like the evolution of voice commands, but instead means that customers can expect their future vehicles to be far more capable and fresh overall when it comes to emerging technologies.” The power of large language models is front and center in the news, and businesses clearly see the benefits of using these tools to provide a net benefit for their customers.
So even though your car may not speak with you and banter like KITT did with Michael Knight, the potential of having ChatGPT-like AI in a car akin to Knight Rider could be a game changer. If successfully deployed, other automakers will likely follow suit and AI will enter yet another industry.
