Legendary video game director, writer, and producer, Hideo Kojima wants to use AI to cheat death. Well, kind of. Though not unheard of, the use of artificial intelligence as a means to avoid our demise is a common trope in science fiction. While speaking to the gaming news outlet, IGN, Kojima opened up with reporter Shuka Yamada about his career plans. But during the interview, things took an interesting turn when the famous gaming figure opened up about his desire to cheat death via AI. The reasoning? Because he wants to continue creating video games in the future, even if he just becomes part of an AI.

It’s a bold desire to continue creating, but for Kojima, it’s the reason he wants to live on. When asked about future collaborations he mentioned this desire as part of a far-off goal, saying in part, “But you know, I’ll probably become an AI and stick around. You need to be stimulated in lots of different ways if you want to keep creating new things, so I imagine I’ll keep collaborating with others and taking in new things even if I’m an AI.”

It’s an interesting concept and one that has been visited often. Of course, the fear of one’s demise is one of the most primal human fears. Which in turn makes the subject of how to cheat a subject of a tremendous amount of research. In media, books such as the Altered Carbon trilogy dive into the topic and take the extra step of asking what the social consequences would be if death were avoidable, what would be the social consequences?

As for Hideo Kojima, the will to carry on is unsurprising. At 59 years old, he has a lot of time ahead of him to continue building his legacy. Though improvements in AI are scaling at a rapid pace, it’s unsure if the technology will ever reach the levels where it can help digitize human consciousness. But one thing is for sure, it’s interesting how artificial intelligence has continued to enter the mainstream imagination.

What do you think, is what Kojima hopes for a possibility, yet distant one? Or will it remain in the realm of science fiction?
