AI is at the top of the to-do list as the U.S. government is actively engaging with top executives from major tech companies and industries to fortify national infrastructure against AI-driven threats. Announced by the Department of Homeland Security, it aims to leverage the expertise of corporate leaders to protect essential services such as airlines and utilities.

Among those enlisted on the panel are tech leaders such as Google’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman. They will join executives from Northrop Grumman, and Delta Air Lines, while other significant sectors will contribute their insights.

It’s clear that the government’s strategy of partnering with the private sector to navigate the complex landscape of artificial intelligence is a pressing issue. All of this comes at a crucial time when the potential risks and benefits of AI are acknowledged but remain largely ungoverned by specific national legislation.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the transformative nature of AI, stating, “Artificial intelligence is a transformative technology that can advance our national interests in unprecedented ways. At the same time, it presents real risks — risks that we can mitigate by adopting best practices and taking other studied concrete actions.

So what will this new board do? Well according to DHS, it will offer guidance to critical sectors on responsible AI. This includes telecommunications, pipeline operations, and electrical utilities, preparing them for potential AI-related disruptions.

The board, which is an extension of a 2023 executive order by President Joe Biden, consists of 22 members. It features a diverse mix of leaders from technology providers like Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Cisco; chipmakers such as AMD; AI model developers like Anthropic; and civil rights groups, including the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Academics like Fei-Fei Li from Stanford University’s Human-centered Artificial Intelligence Institute also join the panel, alongside federal, state, and local officials. Secretary Mayorkas highlighted the urgency of these threats, stating, “It is a risk that is real. We are seeing adverse nation-states engaged and we work to counter their efforts to unduly influence our elections.

It’s true that the threat posed by AI-generated deepfakes has become a particular concern for election security. An incident in January involved a deepfake robocall, falsely attributed to President Biden, which attempted to dissuade Democrats from voting in New Hampshire’s primary.

This event has heightened the urgency for enhanced protective measures against misinformation and foreign interference in the upcoming 2024 U.S. election.
