Meet Salt, a Movie Created Using AI and Social Media
A fully artificial intelligence-powered movie is being created, and it might take science fiction by storm! German tech entrepreneur Fabian Stelzer is in the process of creating an almost completely AI-generated movie titled Salt. Stelzer is using tools such as Stable, Midjourney, and DALL-E 2 to create images, while he utilizes AI voice generators such as Murf (and Stelzer himself) to create his project.
Similar to other AI tools, the tech entrepreneur provides text prompts to these programs which in turn generate the content needed for his movie. Then, he edits together what each AI program creates into the narrative of Salt. Interestingly enough, Fabian Stelzer isn’t the sole person driving the story. Using the power of democratized data science, his community is creating the story. Though there are limitations to the tools and putting together the film, the entrepreneur is pushing forward.
This is driving the narrative, which is fed into each AI program. Think of a Choose Your Own Adventure storybook many of us read as children. This is done on Twitter, where users can watch clips or “Story Seeds” and vote within the comment section. According to Salt’s Twitter post, the goal of the film is to be a “multi-plot story” that is powered by the community.
So far, there is already a 59-second trailer that was posted back in June. Watching the short clip, it’s amazing what has been produced by the AI programs and even more remarkable that Fabian Stelzer was able to edit it all together to make a linear narrative that is powered by his own community.
Speaking to PCMag, Stelzer has high hopes for the project and its impact on the film industry. “We’re on the verge of a new era, really… To me, this is as big as the invention of photography, and to be honest maybe as big as the invention of writing.”
Salt is centered on a group of space explorers who discover a planet that has a vast wealth of salt. Judging from the clips made available, the tone of the film might be a bit darker than a space exploration story. We won’t know until the film is released, but so far the project looks quite fascinating.
