OpenAI has awarded a $1 million grant to Duke University’s Moral Attitudes and Decisions Lab (MADLAB) to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and moral decision-making. This collaboration aims to address one of technology’s most critical challenges: can AI systems accurately predict human moral judgments?

Pioneering Research on Ethical AI

Led by ethics professor Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and co-investigator Jana Schaich Borg, the “Making Moral AI” project seeks to create tools capable of guiding ethical decisions — what the researchers describe as a “moral GPS.”

The project combines insights from diverse disciplines, including computer science, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, to understand how moral judgments are formed and how AI might enhance decision-making processes.

AI’s Role in Moral Decision-Making

MADLAB’s research focuses on how AI could predict or influence moral choices. Potential applications range from autonomous vehicle algorithms deciding between life-and-death scenarios to ethical guidance in business practices.

However, these possibilities raise profound questions. Who determines the moral standards for such systems? And should machines ever be entrusted with decisions involving ethics?
