It seems that humanity is on the brink of a transformative leap in AI, according to OpenAI’s Product Chief Kevin Weil. Speaking with Axios’ Ina Fried at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, Weil declared that AI agents capable of completing real-world tasks are imminent, marking a major milestone in AI development.

Weil’s statement aligns with recent reports suggesting a major AI breakthrough is on the horizon. It was previously reported that a leading AI company is nearing the release of a Ph.D.-level AI agents designed to tackle complex, real-world tasks. This development could redefine how humans interact with AI and revolutionize industries worldwide.

Key Predictions for 2025

“I think 2025 is the year that we go from ChatGPT being this super smart thing that can answer any question you ask to ChatGPT doing things in the real world for you,” Weil explained during the discussion.

Weil pointed to the advanced reasoning capabilities of next-generation AI models as a critical factor in this evolution. These models are expected to be more multimodal, engaging seamlessly with humans and executing tasks that extend beyond the digital sphere.

By as early as this year, AI agents may take on practical responsibilities such as filling out forms or securing restaurant reservations, he said.

Addressing Workforce Concerns

While acknowledging growing anxiety about AI’s potential impact on jobs, Weil encouraged workers to adopt a hands-on approach to AI. “Using these tools will give people a much better sense for how these things really will impact sort of your sphere — your workplace, your friends, your family,” Weil advised.

Weil emphasized that engaging with AI technology now will empower individuals to adapt to and shape the changes it brings, rather than merely reacting to them. “It will also enable workers to participate in the change that AI will bring,” he added.

What’s Next?

The promise of AI agents marks an exciting frontier in the field, blending advanced reasoning, multimodal interaction, and real-world application. However, as the pace of innovation accelerates, questions about ethical considerations, workforce impacts, and regulation remain pressing topics.
