According to a new report, OpenAI has its sights on Google’s search engine dominance as the company is set to announce its new OpenAI search engine product next Monday. The news was revealed by sources who wish to remain anonymous, signals a significant shift in the competitive dynamics between these technology giants.

While the exact details of the announcement are subject to change, the timing is strategic — just a day before Google’s annual I/O conference, known for major tech unveilings. This scheduling could be seen as a direct challenge to Google, which is expected to showcase several AI-driven innovations at the event.

The new OpenAI search engine could extend its flagship product ChatGPT by integrating direct web information retrieval with citation features, enhancing the utility and reliability of the generated responses.

This development comes as part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to enhance the factual accuracy and timeliness of the information provided by ChatGPT, which, despite its popular interface and growing user base, has faced challenges regarding real-time data accuracy.

OpenAI’s foray into the search engine market is backed by Microsoft, adding a layer of intrigue to the competition. Notably, ChatGPT already benefits from an integration with Microsoft’s Bing search engine, available exclusively to paid subscribers. This collaboration has enabled OpenAI to refine its product offerings continuously.

On the competitive front, Perplexity AI, a startup valued at $1 billion and led by a former OpenAI researcher, is also making waves in the AI search domain. Perplexity has made a name for itself with an AI-native search interface that not only provides text responses but also displays citations and images, catering to its growing user base of 10 million monthly active users.

The anticipation surrounding OpenAI search engine is palpable, especially given ChatGPT’s record-setting pace as the fastest application to reach 100 million monthly active users following its launch in late 2022.

However, the traffic to ChatGPT’s website has fluctuated significantly over the past year, only recently returning to its peak levels from May 2023. This backdrop of high expectations and intense market pressure underscores the critical nature of the upcoming launch.
