Tesla CEO Elon Musk Boosting Salaries in Bid to Fight Off OpenAI Poachers
In a bid to fight off OpenAI poachers, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced significant pay raises for the company’s AI engineers. According to Fox Business, this comes as a direct response to OpenAI’s aggressive recruitment strategies, which have seen a number of Tesla’s engineers being lured away by lucrative offers.
The announcement was made through a series of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday, underlining the intensity of the ongoing “talent war” in the AI sector that revealed that machine learning engineer, Ethan Knight, formally of Tesla left for Musk’s startup, xAI.

The competition for AI talent is looking to be quite brutal, notably from OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, as startups and large companies alike seek out talent to help scale their own AI endeavors.
Though Elon Musk was among the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, he stepped down from the board in 2018, and is currently in court with the company. On his social media platform, X (Twitter), Musk had much to say.
“The talent war for AI is the craziest talent war I’ve ever seen,” Musk remarked. All of this underscores the volatile nature of the tech sector. While there is fierce competition for AI engineers, who are in high demand, the tech industry is still reeling from widespread layoffs in other domains.
Musk’s proactive stance on increasing salaries for Tesla’s AI engineers is seen as a crucial step in preventing further poaching by competitors. The tech billionaire’s comments also shed light on the broader industry dynamics, where companies are vying for a limited pool of AI talent to lead their technological advancements.
OpenAI’s raid ascendancy in the AI space, after the public release of ChatGPT, has placed it at the forefront of the generative AI space. The organization’s success has attracted significant investment, including a substantial commitment from Microsoft.
But this goes to say that Musk’s pursuit of an alternative to the offerings from OpenAI and Google has entered a new phase after he launched xAI with the aim of building a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” This initiative reflects Musk’s ambition to shape the future of AI technology, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations in its development.
