Apple has officially set the date for its highly anticipated next major event, where the tech giant is expected to unveil the iPhone 16. On Monday, September 9, Apple will host a special event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, starting at 10 a.m. PT.

The event, tagged with the intriguing slogan “It’s Glowtime,” will also be streamed live online, sparking widespread speculation about what this theme could signify. While the exact meaning of “Glowtime” remains a mystery, many anticipate that embedded AI will be a standout feature of the new iPhone.

Apple has been steadily advancing its AI capabilities, with generative AI expected to be at the forefront of the iPhone 16’s innovations.

Apple’s AI Evolution

In June, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple introduced several generative AI features under the banner of “Apple Intelligence.” These tools include personalized Genmoji — AI-generated emojis — and a smarter, more intuitive Siri. The upgraded Siri can now answer questions about your schedule, check your email, and provide real-time updates on flight statuses.

Although users of the current iPhone 15 Pro Max may access some of these AI-powered features, the iPhone 16 is expected to be the first device fully designed with AI at its core.

Partnership with OpenAI

In a notable move, Apple also announced a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. Angelo Zino, a technology analyst at CFRA Research, tempered expectations by suggesting that the AI enhancements in the iPhone 16 will be part of a gradual evolution rather than a revolutionary leap. “This is going to be more of an evolutionary process, rather than some big cyclical, iPhone cycle,” Zino remarked, noting that some of the advanced AI features, such as an even smarter Siri, may not be fully realized until 2025.

AI Integration: What to Expect

AI has been subtly integrated into iPhones for years. Features like Live Text and improved autocorrect functionality. However, the iPhone 16 is expected to take this integration to the next level. Analysts believe Apple’s AI advancement will likely center around Siri, possibly incorporating OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT-4o model.

This integration could enable Siri to recall photos from years ago, provide more specific and contextual information, and learn user preferences and personality traits over time. This AI-driven approach could significantly impact Apple’s trajectory, particularly as iPhone sales in key markets like China face challenges due to economic uncertainty and increased competition.

The inclusion of generative AI features might provide the innovation edge Apple needs to regain momentum.

The Price Debate

As with every new iPhone release, pricing is a hot topic. Apple enthusiasts have long debated whether iPhone models should be more affordable, while investors focus on maximizing profit margins.

While CFRA Research does not anticipate a substantial price hike for the iPhone 16, Zino noted that the inclusion of AI capabilities “could potentially see them increase prices across the board.”

Competitors like Samsung have already made strides in generative AI, with features such as the “circle to search” gesture, allowing users to quickly search for information on a device’s screen. Apple’s response with the iPhone 16 could set new standards in the AI space, further intensifying the competition.
